QUALITY AND TYPES OF WIGS

There are many factors that go into the construction of a wig or hairpiece that affect the quality and price. The three main factors are the type and quality of the hair, the way the hair is attached and the base structure.

TYPES OF HAIR

Wigs and hairpieces can be made with synthetic hair, human hair or a blend of both. Synthetic hair can be high heat resistant or not. Blends can also be high heat resistant or not. Human hair is inherently heat resistant but there are different types and qualities depending on where the hair is sourced from. The density of the hair on the wig or hairpiece also can vary.

METHODS OF HAIR ATTACHMENT

There are also different methods that the hair is attached to the base of the wig or hairpiece. Machine sewn (weft) wigs or hairpieces use a series of horizontal lines sewn by machine. If you turn the wig or hairpiece over, you will see vertical and horizontal lines of hair. Weft wigs and hairpieces are more economical but can’t be styled freely and are heavier. Hand tied wigs and hairpieces are lighter and more natural looking. They allow you to style your hair in different ways and can take 80-100 hours to create. There are also wigs and hairpieces that are partially had tied (usually the front area) and machine sewn in the back.

TYPES OF HAIRPIECE AND WIG BASES

The inside of the wig or hairpiece is called the base but may also be called the weft, wig foundation or cap. This is the part that comes in contact with your natural hair or scalp. Weft caps are used for machine sewn wigs and hairpieces. These can be heavier and less comfortable than other options. Monofilament (or mono) material is very soft and lets air flow to the scalp. Monofilament is often used for hand tied wigs or hairpieces. Lace wig bases are the most natural and are virtually undetectable by the human eye. They are also the most fragile, so many wigs and hairpieces use a weft or monofilament base with lace at the part and front area.

ATTACHING THE WIG OR HAIRPIECE

Depending on the amount of hair you have, your goals and your lifestyle there are a variety of ways to attach the wig or hairpiece from wearing it alone, adding a wig cap, clipping in, taping on or bonding. We also offer silicone suction bases which are designed for individuals with no hair at all.

The fee for the consultation is $50, which will be credited towards any wig or hairpiece purchase made during the appointment.
